With the release of the problem last week, the 2011 Harold H. Greene and Joyce Hens Green National Security Law Moot Court Competition is happy to wish all of the competitors good luck in this year's Competition.

The 2011 NSL Moot Court Competition is hosted on the campus of The George Washington University Law School on Saturday, February 12th and Sunday, February 13th. The Competition will not be extended to take place on Monday, February 14th despite earlier announcements to the contrary.

Also, the Competition is consolidating to just one web page. For all updates on the 2011 Competition, including upcoming announcements, please visit the GW Law NSL Moot Court Competition Webpage. This blog will no longer be updated with new information.

This is the FINAL CALL for registration in the 2011 Harold H. Greene and Joyce Hens Green National Security Law Moot Court Competition hosted by The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. The competition is February 12th - 13th.

The registration deadline is November 15th and there are only a few spots left. Reminder that both the registration form (available here) and the registration fee must both be received no later than November 15th to be entered. If you have already submitted your form and fee then please disregard this post and we thank you for submitting your entry early.

This is the FINAL CALL for registration in the competition. The deadline to register is November 15th for what is surely to be another great competition.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the U.S. government has implemented several new programs purported to aid in securing the United States from future terrorist attacks. Many of these programs have been subject to debate and some have even been criticized in terms of their usefulness and legality.

If interested in how the above debate, state secrets, constitutional law and national security law intersect, then join us for the 2011 Harold H. Greene and Joyce Hens Green National Security Law Moot Court Competition hosted by The George Washington University Law School on President's Day Weekend 2011.

Compete against 26 other teams from national law schools at GW Law
Argue before a panel of judges chosen from the CIA, FBI, and National Security Counsel
The final arguments will likely be broadcast on C-SPAN

Registration for the 2011 Harold H. Greene and Joyce Hens Green National Security Law Moot Court Competition held at The George Washington University Law School is now open.

The competition will be held President's Day Weekend (Saturday, February 12th to Sunday, February 13th) on the campus of The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.

The deadline to register (both registration form and entry fee must be received) is November 15th with the problem to be released on November 22nd. Competitor's briefs will be due January 17th.

Participation is limited to the first 26 teams with a maximum of two teams per law school. Send in the registration form with payment quickly to reserve your place.

Weather Update: NSL Moot Court Will Continue As Planned

As many of you know, Washington, D.C. has experienced severe winter weather over the last two weeks. That weather will apparently end today, and all weather reports point to a clear President's Day Weekend. Accordingly, the NSL Moot Court will go forward as planned.

Competitors should be aware that sidewalks are currently covered with snow and ice, and area roads are in generally bad condition. Contestants are strongly encouraged to leave plenty of time to travel to the GW Law School on Saturday and Sunday.

Fmr. CIA Director Jim Woolsey to Join Final Panel

The Honorable James Woolsey, Former CIA Director, will be the third justice on the final panel of the 2010 National Security Law Moot Court competition. He will be joined by the previously announced justices, Judge Patricia Wald and Mr. Richard Klingler.

Mr. Woolsey previously served in the U.S. Government on five different occasions, where he held Presidential appointments in two Republican and two Democratic administrations, most recently (1993-95) as Director of Central Intelligence. From July 2002 to March 2008 Mr. Woolsey was a Vice President and officer of Booz Allen Hamilton. He was also previously a partner at the law firm of Shea & Gardner in Washington, DC, now Goodwin Procter, where he practiced for 22 years in the fields of civil litigation, arbitration, and mediation.

During his 12 years of government service, in addition to heading the CIA and the Intelligence Community, Mr. Woolsey was: Ambassador to the Negotiation on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), Vienna, 1989–1991; Under Secretary of the Navy, 1977–1979; and General Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, 1970–1973. He was also appointed by the President to serve on a part-time basis in Geneva, Switzerland, 1983–1986, as Delegate at Large to the U.S.–Soviet Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) and Nuclear and Space Arms Talks (NST). As an officer in the U.S. Army, he was an adviser on the U.S. Delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I), Helsinki and Vienna, 1969–1970.

Mr. Woolsey is presently a Venture Partner with VantagePoint Venture Partners of San Bruno, California. He also chairs the Strategic Advisory Group of the Washington, D.C. private equity fund, Paladin Capital Group; and is Of Counsel to the Washington, D.C. office of the Boston-based law firm, Goodwin Procter. In the above capacities he specializes in a range of alternative energy and security issues.

Mr. Woolsey was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and attended Tulsa public schools, graduating from Tulsa Central High School. He received his B.A. degree from Stanford University (1963, With Great Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa), an M.A. from Oxford University (Rhodes Scholar 1963–1965), and an LL.B from Yale Law School (1968, Managing Editor of the Yale Law Journal).

We have decided to extend the deadline by at least one week, and we will soon notify competitors of the new due date. Please keep in mind that the deadline is the date by which we must have received your briefs. Postmarks on the due date are not sufficient to be counted as having timely submitted briefs.

2010 NSL Moot Court -- Competition Problem Released Today

The competition problem for the 2010 NSL Moot Court was emailed to contestants this morning around 11:45am. If you did not receive a copy of the problem, please email us at nslmootcourt@gmail.com.

Please note the change in the brief deadline, which had to be moved up several days to allow for additional time for scoring. Best of luck to everyone during the exam season!

2010 Competition Problem: A Preview

In preparation for selecting coaches (which are completely optional), we have been asked about the general theme of the 2010 competition problem, so contestants may pick a coach with appropriate expertise. While we cannot reveal specifics, the 2010 competition problem will involve an appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States of a criminal conviction under federal law. Obviously, the subject matter of the problem will involve a type of national security issue (lest we feel foolish calling this the National Security Law Moot Court Competition).

Thus, contestants should feel safe picking a coach who has knowledge in national security law, criminal law, appellate law, or most other areas of the law. As always, the key to any good moot court performance is careful research, good writing, and much practice for oral arguments. And, any good lawyer or professor is likely well positioned to help generally with those activities.

One word of caution on coaches: The rules accompanying the competition problem will state that while coaches are welcome, they are limited to help generally with the theme of the competition problem, major concepts underlying the brief arguments, and preparation for oral advocacy. Coaches may not participate directly in the research or writing of the brief.

Registration is Closed, Wait List Active

We have officially reached our registration capacity of 26 teams for the 2010 competition. However, we are maintaining a wait list for those who have expressed interest in joining the competition, but who did not make it into one of the 26 spots. If teams drop out of the competition or fail to complete the registration process within the next week, we will notify those on the wait list of the option to participate. Thanks to everyone for strong interest in this year's topic. We are working now to finalize the problem in time for its release around December 7. Stay tuned...

NSL Registration Update: Space is Still Available

Over the past week, we have received a lot of inquiries about whether the competition is nearing the 26 team limit, because many law schools are just now finishing an internal competition or selection process to determine who will participate in the 2010 NSL Moot Court. Rest assured that if you email us (nslmootcourt@gmail.com) and send in your registration materials and payment (but note that competitor names will be provided later), we will hold a spot for you.

We are excited about all of the interest in this year's competition, and look forward to excellent arguments next February. Meanwhile, stay tuned for an announcement in the near future about our last final panelist.

Judge Patricia Wald Joins Final Panel

Judge Patricia Wald, formerly Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, will join the final panel of the 2010 National Security Law Moot Court competition. Judge Wald has extensive experience in national security and international law issues, most recently as a member of the Iraq Intelligence Commission and as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. She is also an emeritus council member of the American Law Institute.

Judge Wald attended Yale Law School and clerked for Judge Jerome Frank of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Former NSC General Counsel to Serve as Justice on the NSL Moot Court Final Panel

Former NSC General Counsel and Legal Adviser Richard Klingler will serve as an Associate Justice on the final panel of the NSL Moot Court competition. Mr. Klingler served in the NSC position from 2006-2007, advising senior government officials on an array of intelligence, defense, foreign policy, litigation, and investigatory matters. From 2005-2007, he served in the Office of the Counsel to the President, concluding as Senior Associate Counsel to the President.

A Rhodes Scholar, Mr. Klingler holds a law degree from Stanford University and clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Judge Kenneth Starr. He is presently a partner at Sidley Austin LLP. His full biography may be found here.
